Monte Tre Calli and the Lattari peaks: a panoramic hike from Agerola

Monte Tre Calli (about 1,122 metres) is the mountain that towers over Agerola and the Path of the Gods. From the top you can see Positano, Capri, the Faraglioni, the Sorrento Peninsula and the Gulf of Salerno: one of the widest views on the Amalfi Coast. You climb it from Bomerano on a loop of a few hours, harder than the Path of the Gods but far less crowded. It’s the right hike for anyone who has already done the famous trails and is looking for silence and big views.

I’m Sebastiano and I live in Bomerano, right at the foot of Tre Calli. Here’s what to know before you go up.

Monte Tre Calli at a glance

  • Start: the square in Bomerano (Agerola)
  • Summit height: about 1,122 m
  • Elevation gain: about 500 m from the village
  • Time: 2-3 hours for the loop
  • Difficulty: demanding hike; some steep, stony stretches
  • Water: no fountains along the way: bring all you need

Why it’s worth it

  • The view. From the top you can see the Gulf of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno at the same time, and the whole Path of the Gods is visible, like a thin line above the sea.
  • The peace and quiet. While the Path of the Gods is very busy in high season, here you meet very few people.
  • The nature of the Lattari Mountains. Woods, high meadows and, in spring, wild flowers.

The route

The climb from Bomerano. You leave the village and climb through the woods towards the ridge.

The ridge and the summit. Once out of the woods, the view opens onto both gulfs, Naples and Salerno. At the top it’s worth stopping to rest and take photos.

The descent. You can go back the same way or complete a loop. For very fit hikers there’s also a long route combining Tre Calli with the Path of the Gods (about 15 km and almost 900 m of climbing).

For those who want more: Sant’Angelo a Tre Pizzi

The highest peak of the Lattari Mountains is Monte Sant’Angelo a Tre Pizzi (about 1,444 m), with views over the Gulf of Naples and Vesuvius. It’s a hike for experienced walkers, longer, with difficult passages on the final summit, and it’s usually tackled from the Monte Faito side. If you want to do it, ask me first: I’ll tell you how to organise it or who to contact for a guide.

When to go

  • Spring and autumn: the ideal seasons, with clear air and pleasant temperatures.
  • Summer: only if you start at dawn; there’s no shade on the ridge. A date to remember: on the night of 14 August there’s the Alba Magica (Magic Dawn). People walk up to the summit, the local band comes too, everyone spends the night in tents and at dawn on Ferragosto (15 August) the band plays a concert as the sun rises over the sea.
  • Winter: on clear days the view is spectacular, but it can be cold and very windy. Avoid foggy days: besides missing the view, it’s easy to lose the trail.

What to bring

  • Proper hiking boots with a good tread
  • At least 1.5-2 litres of water per person
  • A windproof jacket, even in summer
  • A snack, sunscreen, a hat
  • A charged phone with the route downloaded (the signal is weak in places)

Mistakes to avoid

  • Going up in fog or with an uncertain forecast. The weather on the ridge changes quickly.
  • Setting off with too little water. There are no fountains.
  • Underestimating the descent. On gravel and stones your knees work harder than on the way up.

Frequently asked questions

Is it suitable for people who aren’t fit? No. If it’s your first mountain hike, start with the Path of the Gods.

Can I do it with a guide? Yes, and if you don’t know the area it’s a great idea.

When is the view best? On clear days after the tramontana, the cold north wind, in autumn and winter, when you can sometimes see the islands of the Gulf of Naples too.

Stay at the foot of Monte Tre Calli

To climb at a relaxed pace and start early, the best thing is to sleep in Bomerano. Costa Blu is in the centre of the village, 50 metres from the start of the Path of the Gods and at the foot of Tre Calli: breakfast included, quiet rooms to recover in, and all my tips on the next day’s route.
