Capri as a day trip from Agerola: how to plan it
You can visit Capri as a day trip from Agerola: take the bus down to Amalfi or to Castellammare di Stabia, and from there the ferry reaches Capri in about an hour. Alternatively there’s the boat tour, which goes round the island with swimming stops and as far as the Blue Grotto. Ferries from Amalfi run mainly from April to early November, so out of season it’s best to go via Sorrento.
I’m Sebastiano, I live in Agerola and I often organise the Capri day for my guests. Here’s how to do it.
Ferry or boat tour?
Scheduled ferry (cheaper). It takes you to the port of Marina Grande and then you get around the island on your own, by funicular, bus and taxi. It’s the right choice if you want to explore Capri and Anacapri at your own pace.
Boat tour (more comfortable and scenic). You leave from Amalfi and sail round the island: the Faraglioni, the grottoes, swimming stops and usually a few hours of free time ashore. It generally lasts 4 to 8 hours. It’s the right choice if you want to see Capri from the sea without worrying about timetables and connections.
My advice: if it’s your first time and the sea is calm, the boat tour is the most beautiful experience. I don’t run the Capri excursions myself, but I’m happy to book them for my guests.
How to get to Capri from Agerola
- SITA bus from Agerola to Amalfi (the bus stop in Amalfi is by the harbour). Take one of the first buses in the morning: ferries to Capri usually leave mid-morning.
- Ferry from Amalfi to Capri: about 1 hour, or about 35 minutes on the faster boats.
From Castellammare di Stabia: alternatively, take the SITA bus from Agerola down to Castellammare (mountain road) and catch the hydrofoil to Capri there, which takes about 40-50 minutes. Sailings run mainly from spring to autumn. It’s also handy if you’re travelling on to Naples or Sorrento afterwards.
Out of season: when there are no ferries from Amalfi, you go to Capri from Sorrento (SITA bus, or the Circumvesuviana from Castellammare to Sorrento, then the ferry).
What to see in Capri in one day
- The Piazzetta and the little streets of Capri town, reached by funicular from Marina Grande.
- The Gardens of Augustus, with views of the Faraglioni and Via Krupp.
- Anacapri, quieter, with the Monte Solaro chairlift to the island’s highest point.
- The Blue Grotto, if the sea allows (see below).
You can’t see everything in one day: choose 2 or 3 things and enjoy them without rushing.
The Blue Grotto: what to know first
- You go in on small rowing boats, lying down, through a very low opening.
- You pay on the spot, around 16-18 euros.
- It often closes when the sea is rough or the tide is high, even in summer: don’t plan your whole day around it.
- On busy days you may wait up to an hour in the boat.
Practical tips
- Avoid the busiest hours: between 11 am and 2 pm cruise-ship passengers arrive on the island.
- Check the weather and the sea the evening before: in rough seas ferries can be cancelled.
- Keep an eye on the return time: the last ferry to Amalfi usually leaves in the late afternoon, and from Amalfi you need to catch the bus to Agerola.
- Comfortable shoes: Capri is all steps and slopes.
- Cash: handy for the funicular, the island buses and the Blue Grotto.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a day in Capri cost? It varies a lot: ferry, transport on the island and the Blue Grotto if you go. The boat tour costs more, but it already includes the trip round the island.
Can you go to Capri in winter? Yes, but with fewer connections and many shops and restaurants closed. In winter it’s best to leave from Sorrento.
Capri or the Amalfi Coast mini cruise? They’re two different experiences: Capri is an island to explore, while the mini cruise shows you Positano, Amalfi and the coast’s grottoes from the sea. I can book the mini cruise for you too.
A quiet base after a day in Capri
After a day of ferries, steps and crowds, coming back to the peace of Agerola is a pleasure. Costa Blu is in the centre of Bomerano: quiet rooms with private bathrooms, breakfast included so you can set off early, and my help booking the boat tour or the mini cruise.
