Staying in Agerola to visit the Amalfi Coast: why it's worth it

Staying in Agerola is one of the smartest choices for visiting the Amalfi Coast: you’re about half an hour from Amalfi, at the start of the Path of the Gods, in a village that’s cooler, quieter and usually cheaper than Positano and Amalfi, and parking is much easier. The trade-off is that you’re not by the sea: for the beach you need the bus or a car.

I’m Sebastiano, I run a small B&B in Agerola and every year I host hundreds of travellers who’ve made this choice. Here, honestly, are the pros and cons.

Where is Agerola?

Agerola is a plateau at about 650 metres in the Lattari Mountains, right above Furore and Amalfi, halfway between the Amalfi Coast and the Sorrento Peninsula. It’s made up of six villages; the best known is Bomerano, where the Path of the Gods begins.

Approximate driving times:

  • Amalfi: about 30 minutes
  • Furore and its fjord: about 30 minutes, or on foot along a path down from Agerola
  • Positano: about 45 minutes to 1 hour, or on foot along the Path of the Gods
  • Ravello: about 45 minutes
  • Sorrento: about 1 hour
  • Pompeii: about 40 minutes

The advantages of staying in Agerola

1. Cool summers. Thanks to the altitude, in summer Agerola is a few degrees cooler than the coast and you sleep well at night.

2. Peace and quiet. No crowds and no traffic under your window: in the evening Agerola is a real village, where local families live.

3. The price. For the same quality, staying in Agerola generally costs less than in Positano or Amalfi.

4. Parking. On the coast finding a parking space is hard and expensive; in Agerola it’s much easier.

5. The trails. You’re at the start of the Path of the Gods and close to the Valle delle Ferriere and the Fiordo di Furore: for walkers it’s the perfect base.

6. The food. Agerola is famous for its dairy products: fior di latte mozzarella and provolone del monaco cheese. Eating well costs less than on the coast.

The disadvantages (good to know beforehand)

  • You’re not by the sea. For the beach you travel by bus or car.
  • The roads are mountain roads. Bends and hairpins: if you get car sick, bear it in mind.
  • Evenings need a little planning. You can easily have dinner on the coast: the last bus from Amalfi to Agerola leaves at around 11 pm in summer and 10 pm in autumn. Just keep it in mind and, if you’re eating in Positano, allow time to get to Amalfi.

Getting around from Agerola

  • SITA buses: they connect Agerola with Amalfi (from there, ferries and buses along the whole coast) and with Castellammare di Stabia (from there, trains to Pompeii, Sorrento and Naples).
  • Ferries: from Amalfi to Positano, Capri and Salerno, mainly from spring to autumn.
  • Car or scooter: the freest way to get around. If you stay at Costa Blu, I’ll put you in touch with a trusted rental agency that gives priority to my guests.

A sample 3 days based in Agerola

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a car in Agerola? No, but it helps. With buses and ferries you can visit the whole coast; with a car or scooter you’re freer, especially in the evening.

Is Agerola a good place for families? Yes: it’s quiet and cool, with green spaces and easy walks.

Agerola or Sorrento as a base? Sorrento is handier for Capri; Agerola is handier for Amalfi, Positano and the trails. For Naples and Pompeii it takes more or less the same time from both. If your trip is centred on the Amalfi Coast, Agerola is the closer choice.
