When to visit Agerola and the Path of the Gods: a month-by-month guide

The best months to visit Agerola and walk the Path of the Gods are April, May, June, September and October: pleasant temperatures, long days, ferries running and fewer crowds than in high summer. July and August are fine if you start at dawn; from November to March you’ll find silence, clear skies and lower prices, but short days and fewer connections.

I’m Sebastiano and I live in Agerola all year round. Here’s what to expect, month by month.

At a glance

  • Spring (April-June): the best time for the trails; flowers and mild temperatures.
  • Summer (July-August): strong heat and lots of people on the coast; it’s cooler in Agerola.
  • Autumn (September-October): the sea is still warm, golden light, perfect trails.
  • Winter (November-March): peace and low prices; short days and fewer ferries.

Month by month

January and February. The coldest and quietest months. On days with the tramontana, the cold north wind, the air is crystal clear and from the trails you can see as far as Capri. Rain is possible and, rarely, snow on the peaks of the Lattari Mountains. Many restaurants on the coast are closed, but Agerola is a living village all year round.

March. The days get longer and the first flowers appear. A good month for walking if the weather is settled.

April. The season begins: the Mediterranean scrub is in flower, temperatures are ideal and the ferries along the coast start running again. Watch out for Easter and long weekends, when lots of people arrive.

May. For many, the perfect month: warm but not too hot, long days, nature at its best. It’s also the season for hiking groups, so it’s worth booking ahead.

June. Rising heat, and the sea is already good for swimming. On the trail, start early in the morning.

July and August. The trail is almost entirely in the sun: start at dawn and bring plenty of water. The coast is very crowded and the coast buses are full. Up here in Agerola, at 650 metres, the evenings are cool and you sleep well: that’s the advantage of staying in the mountains.

September. The heat drops, the sea stays warm and the crowds thin out after mid-month. One of the very best months.

October. Golden light, mild temperatures and perfect trails. The days get shorter: set off by mid-morning. At the end of the month some ferries reduce their services.

November and December. Low season: silence, chestnuts in Agerola’s woods, low prices. Check the weather and your way back carefully, because ferries to Positano and Amalfi run little or not at all. For New Year’s Eve, people usually book Agerola late, and often by phone.

Agerola’s climate compared with the coast

Agerola is at about 650 metres: it’s generally a few degrees cooler than Amalfi and Positano. That’s an advantage in summer, and a reason to pack a sweater for the evenings in spring and autumn.

Tips for every season

  • Spring and autumn: layers, a light jacket, hiking boots.
  • Summer: start at dawn, 2 litres of water, a hat and sunscreen.
  • Winter: check the forecast, avoid the trails after heavy rain, plan your return by bus.
