Easy walks in Agerola: viewpoints, castles and woods for everyone
In Agerola you don’t need to be an experienced hiker to enjoy nature and the views. The easiest walks are the one to Castello Lauritano in San Lazzaro, with views of the coast and the Gulf of Salerno, the Colonia Montana park in San Lazzaro, the chestnut woods of Punta Corona park, the Paipo viewpoint and the first stretch of the Path of the Gods, which gives you a sea view within half an hour. They’re perfect for families with children, travellers with grandparents or anyone who just wants a quiet day.
I’m Sebastiano and I live in Bomerano, one of the six villages of Agerola. These are the walks I suggest to people who tell me: “The Path of the Gods is too much for us, what can we do?”
Agerola in a nutshell
Agerola is a plateau at about 650 metres above sea level, above the Amalfi Coast, made up of six villages: Bomerano, Campora, Pianillo, Ponte, San Lazzaro and Santa Maria. It’s cooler than the coast in summer, famous for its dairy products (fior di latte mozzarella and provolone del monaco cheese) and full of viewpoints.
1. The first stretch of the Path of the Gods
You don’t have to go all the way to Positano: the first stretch of the trail from Bomerano, 20-30 minutes of almost flat walking, already brings you to a viewpoint over the sea. Then you come back the same way.
- For: everyone, including children used to walking
- Time: 1 hour there and back, at a gentle pace
- Tip: at sunset the light on the coast is beautiful
2. Castello Lauritano (San Lazzaro)
The ruins of a medieval fortress on a hill above San Lazzaro, at about 700 metres. From the top you can see the Amalfi Coast as far as the Gulf of Salerno and, on clear days, all the way to Punta Licosa in the Cilento.
- For: everyone
- How to get there: from the square in San Lazzaro follow the signs for the castle, uphill
- Tip: combine it with a stroll around San Lazzaro, the part of Agerola closest to Amalfi
3. Colonia Montana park in San Lazzaro
One of the most beautiful places in Agerola: a large green space in San Lazzaro, where you can walk slowly and stop to breathe the mountain air.
- For: everyone, ideal for families
- Good to know: in summer the Colonia Montana hosts some of the concerts of the “Sui Sentieri degli Dei” festival, Agerola’s summer season of music and shows, which ends with the Alba Magica (Magic Dawn) on Monte Tre Calli on the night between 14 and 15 August
4. Punta Corona park
Chestnut woods with shady spots and picnic areas, leading to a viewpoint over the coast. In summer it’s the perfect place for a cool walk or a picnic with the children, and some of the summer festival concerts are held here too.
- For: families, anyone looking for shade and peace
- Tip: bring something to eat and stop under the chestnut trees
5. The Paipo viewpoint
The tip I love giving to anyone who wants a big view without doing the whole Path of the Gods. From Paipo you climb up the mountain to an open-air altar: from up there the view is very similar to the one from the trail, with Capri and the Faraglioni and the little islands of Li Galli in front of you.
- For: people who enjoy walking; it’s a climb, short but best taken slowly
- Tip: go in the late afternoon, when the light on the sea is at its best
6. Churches and villages
A walk between the villages is also a way to discover Agerola’s history:
- in Campora, the baroque church of San Michele Arcangelo;
- in Bomerano, the church of San Matteo Apostolo, a few steps from the start of the Path of the Gods.
7. A tasty break
A walk in Agerola isn’t complete without tasting the local products: fior di latte mozzarella and provolone del monaco cheese in the village dairies.
When to go
All year round. In summer Agerola is a few degrees cooler than the coast, so it’s perfect for walking when it’s too hot in Amalfi and Positano. In autumn the chestnut woods change colour and chestnuts are harvested.
What to bring
- Comfortable shoes (trainers are fine)
- Water and a hat in summer
- A light sweater in the evening, even in summer: it gets cool up here
Frequently asked questions
Is Agerola good for families with children? Yes: it’s quiet, it has green spaces, parks and short walks, and much less traffic than the coast.
Do I need a car to get between the villages? The villages are connected by SITA buses and easy roads; many walks can be done on foot straight from Bomerano.
Can I do these walks with a pushchair? In the village centres, yes; on the trails and up to the castle, no.
A quiet base for the whole family
Costa Blu is in the centre of Bomerano, in a courtyard away from the road: spacious rooms with private bathrooms, the Corallo triple room for families, breakfast included and public parking a few metres away.
